DESCRIPTION
The netcserv super-server provides all the required networking services
(file, queue, print, bindery, SAP, and RIP) to be compatible with Novell
NetWare 3.11. The file services make a BSD/OS system into a network file
server. The files on the BSD/OS system are transparently available from
any NetWare client workstation or another IPX/SPX client. The RIP rout-
ing information protocol server sends and receives routing packets allow-
ing access to and from any node on the network through Novell compatible
routers and bridges. The SAP service advertising protocol server sends
and receives requests for information about file, print and terminal emu-
lation services.
The IPX/SPX file server is a user-level implementation of NETC protocol
which is compatible with NetWare (NCP) requests related to file, bindery,
print queue, and print server requests. The server communicates via the
sockets interface to the IPX protocol stack.
The implementation consists of multiple processes spawned during startup:
one process for the main file server listener, two for file server sap
services, one for rip services, and one for each BSD/OS printer. An ad-
ditional process is generated for each connection in use.
OPTIONS-c Turns off caching to save memory.
-d Enables debugging.
-g Disables SAP replies.
-w delay
Causes SAP replies to be delayed by delay seconds. The BSD/OS
IPX/SPX server defaults to a 2 second delay when replying to find-
nearest-server requests. When used in networks where the BSD/OS
IPX/SPX server is the only NetWare server, this delay should be set
to 0 seconds. If there are other NetWare servers on the LAN, the
default delay of two seconds gives the other servers time to re-
spond ahead of the BSD/OS IPX/SPX server. Without the delay,
clients will usually find the BSD/OS server as the ``nearest.''
-p Disable print services.
-r Enable RIP responses. This option is required if the BSD/OS
IPX/SPX server is the only NetWare server on the network.
-t timeout
Set the print queue timeout. This defaults to 600 seconds.
-b size
Set the size of the bindery in 1K blocks.
-m timeout
Set server timeout in minutes.
-h handles
Set the size of the file handle cache. Usage may be determined
with the netcstat command. The default number of cached file han-
dles is 1024.
SERVER CONFIGURATION
Netcserv performs a fully automated configuration during startup. It
sets up network print servers and print queues for each configured BSD/OS
printer. There are no user-configurable parameters for netcserv, except
to specify the network volumes to be exported in the netcexport(5) file.
If the export file is modified or new BSD/OS printers are added, the sys-
tem must be rebooted for netcserv properly update the configuration.
USAGEnetcserv is typically started automatically by the /etc/rc script if the
system is configured as a IPX/SPX server.
For a typical configuration where there are other Novell servers on the
network, netcserv would typically be started without arguments:
netcserv
If the BSD/OS IPX/SPX server is the only Novell server on the network, a
typical command to start netcserv would include arguments:
netcserv-w 0 -r
